The top diplomats of Russia and the United States are meeting face-to-face for the first time since September 2025
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Thursday on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Manila, Philippines.
The two diplomats did not make any statements or answer questions from reporters before or after the meeting, their first face-to-face talks since September 2025.
The two sides were expected to discuss the ongoing conflict involving Russia and Ukraine, as well as the United States and Iran. Due to the tight schedule, the meeting lasted about 35 minutes.
The spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, said the Americans requested the meeting, which is seen by many as an attempt by Rubio to revive the peace talks that President Donald Trump has wanted to reconcile Russia and Ukraine since he returned to the White House early last year.
Although initially promising, the talks have so far failed to bring any success and have largely stalled since the US entered the war in the Middle East.
Moscow has praised Trump’s efforts while largely blaming Ukraine’s European backers for trying to undermine the talks. Earlier this month, Lavrov said that the West is not looking for a solution in good faith, saying that “the reservoir of goodwill and hope is complete.”
