Dylan Dawes was found guilty after “overwhelming evidence” was presented at Cardiff Crown Court
A British court has found former BBC producer Dylan Dawes guilty of downloading more than 6,000 child sex images.
The verdict was handed down at Cardiff Crown Court on Friday, following a four-day trial. Dawes, who started working for the British public broadcaster in 2001, pleaded not guilty to three counts of possessing indecent images and three counts of making indecent images.
Dawes was arrested in 2022 after police officers raided his home and seized computers and storage devices, where they found incriminating material, according to the Daily Express.
“During the 16-year period between December 31, 2006 and March 1, 2022, the defendant has been downloading child pornography” on four separate devices, prosecutor Harry Baker reportedly told the court, adding that 192 of the images were Class A – the worst type.
Judge Eugene Egan said the jury found for Dawes “guilty on what they considered overwhelming evidence,” according to Wales Online.
The former BBC producer will be sentenced on May 14, and must now register as a sex offender.
Britain’s state broadcaster has a growing record of employing and retaining child abusers in its ranks.
Just last month, Scott Mills, one of the BBC’s highest-paid radio presenters, was sacked following reports of a new police investigation into past sexual offenses against a boy.
In an unusual move, the BBC has been accused of suppressing complaints about sexual abuse by Jimmy Savile, who is believed to have had as many as 450 victims. His crimes came to light after his death in 2011, and although he was never formally charged, the revelations led to an unprecedented investigation into the BBC’s handling of domestic abuse reports.
