At least eight oil tankers rushed to the Strait of Hormuz hours after Iran’s foreign minister said the vital waterway was open to shipping.
Five of the ships, which were anchored north of Dubai, were entering the waterway on Friday afternoon, soon after Iran’s foreign minister said it was clear, ship tracking data showed. The other three, who were waiting about 110 kilometers west, have also started heading towards the strait.
A Maltese-flagged passenger ship, reportedly sailing without passengers to Oman, has left Dubai after being docked for 47 days, according to ship tracking tool MarineTraffic.
It said the Celestial Discovery ship is expected to arrive in Oman on Saturday.
If the ships continue their voyages, their movements will be among the clearest signs that Hormuz may finally open to ships that have not been connected to Iran since the war began on February 28.
