The best protein bars are grab-and-go snacks, not meal replacements. It is especially helpful when all foods are not available or when your schedule will not allow you to find a suitable meal. The most beneficial sources of protein come with fiber, healthy fats and other nutrients. (That’s why registered dietitians recommend whole foods over more processed alternatives.) So, while high-protein snacks may boast impressive numbers on the label, they’re not always the best choice.
After consulting with nutritionists about the key ingredients to look for (and what to avoid), we’ve rounded up the best protein bars that meet those standards. For more tips on protein, check out our guide to The best protein powders and What? How Much Protein Do I Need?
Updated March 2026: Added Aloha Organic Protein Bars, Promix Protein Puff Bars, and Mush Protein Bars as new options. I added an Honorable Mention section with more protein bars to consider, as well as a Frequently Asked Questions section that includes a note about David’s Protein Bars. Finally, I have included my testing process and updated the existing options with new information, prices and links.

Best Protein Bars Overall
RxBar now offers several different protein bars, but the Classic 12G remains the best. It is made from whole foods, the basis is a mixture of egg whites – complete protein – sweet and binding dates, and nuts (pecans, hazelnuts, cashews, walnuts, peanuts, almonds). I have tried the taste chocolate sea saltbut RxBar also sells blueberriespeanut butter, peanut chocolate, vanilla almonds, coconut chocolateand strawberries. It has a sticky, chewy texture, so if that’s not your taste, there’s a nut butter and oat package that swaps dates for rolled oats. These can also be a good choice if you follow a keto diet or are concerned about sugar from dates, but remember that nut butter still contains sugar, and the protein content varies with taste, so check the nutrition label.
Avoid these if you are allergic to eggs. Other methods are simple and clean, except for “natural flavors.” RxBar shared a live video more information about what those include, which is more transparent than most companies provide, but it can still be a concern if you prioritize complete transparency.
TL;DR: RxBars are one of the cleanest protein bars available, with a short list of ingredients and balanced macros. There are several variations to choose from, but avoid them entirely if you have an egg allergy. 7.25/10.
Best Plant-Based Protein Bars
Aloha Protein Bars are a great vegan option, providing 14 grams of protein from a brown rice and pumpkin seed blend. They also provide between 6 and 10 grams of fiber, depending on the flavor, so other bars (eg cookies and cream) is a fiber supplement like protein snack. They do not contain soy, milk, gluten, stevia and sugar alcohols. Their sweetness comes from monk fruit, tapioca syrup, and rice syrup powder. Although they are often pure, they contain natural flavors, which appear to be uniquely processed.
