China’s export growth accelerated in the first two months of this year, defying last year’s highs as experts signaled the possibility of faster growth for the rest of the year.
Exports rose 21.8 percent from a year earlier to US$656.58 billion in January and February figures released by the customs administration on Tuesday.
This represented a huge jump from the 6.6 percent growth recorded in December and a 5.5 percent increase recorded over the past year.
Imports for the first two months rose 19.8 percent from a year earlier, accelerating from December’s 5.7 percent growth.
Last year’s growth of 5.5 percent lifted the annual value of China’s exports to US$3.77 trillion, according to customs data, with increased exports contributing to a record trade surplus of US$1.19 trillion.
