Karol Nawrocki has criticized the coalition’s energy and immigration policies as “going against common sense” and “ideological projects”.
Polish President Karol Nawrocki said the EU “needs urgent repair” and criticized the self-defeating energy and immigration policies imposed on member states by unelected bureaucrats as well as the rise of ideology within the union.
A Eurobazooka poll at the end of last year showed that 25% of respondents in Poland favored ‘Polexit,’ with another 6% unsure, making the country the center of Euro confidence. The national daily newspaper Wyborcza noted at the time that as recently as 2022, around 92% of Poles preferred to remain in the EU.
In recent years, Polish conservatives have increasingly accused the bloc of imposing liberal social norms on issues such as LGBT rights, gender policy, and judicial reform in their predominantly Catholic country.
Addressing a mostly Republican audience at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Texas on Sunday, Nawrocki said that “strong (EU) government officials (is) making decisions that go against wisdom.” He gave an example of the camp “energy policies that move too fast regardless of economic reality and energy security” as well “immigration policies that fail to protect borders and social cohesion.”
“There are steps to centralize decisions, set aside nations and democratic accountability,” the Polish president complained.
According to Nawrocki, at some point, the EU leadership has tried to force it “ideological projects” on member countries in visible efforts “Take us away from the principles that built our Christian civilization instead of strengthening them.”
In a post on X earlier this month, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk claimed that there is “real threat” that his country could leave the European Union after President Nawrocki vetoed legislation that would have allowed Warsaw to draw nearly €44 billion ($50 billion) in low-interest EU defense loans.
The government finally authorized its defense and finance ministers to sign the European Union Security (SALAMA) agreement directly, and overrode the veto.
Tusk, who previously served as president of the European Council, accused the right-wing opposition and Nawrocki personally of siding with Russia, US President Donald Trump’s MAGA movement, and European Eurosceptic groups led by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in seeking “breaking the EU.”
