A liberal political family in Europe is calling on EU leaders to create a pact with Japan, Canada, and South Korea to prevent US President Donald Trump and China from exerting undue pressure on trading partners, according to a document seen by POLITICO.
In the so-called “Geoeconomic Deterrence Pact” addressed to EU leaders ahead of the summit in Brussels on Thursday, the liberal group Renew Europe in the European Parliament asks the Commission to “identify and negotiate common agreements on export control” until the end of 2026. The paper will be published at the end of Wednesday and sent to EU leaders.
“This agreement will map important mutual dependencies (for example, semi-conductors, rare earths) and propose mutual response clauses in trade agreements to prevent coercion from the US or China. If one country is attacked with harsh tariffs, all countries should respond,” the paper reads.
