Jospin, patron of traditional parties, criticized President Emmanuel Macron for making them old-fashioned and the “hubris” of the French president. in a published book in 2020.
Macron praised Jospin as “nice french guy” in a social media post on Monday. “Through his austerity, courage and quality of development, he embodied the highest vision of the Republic,” Macron. wrote on X.
Jospin, who successfully united the left bloc during his tenure as party leader in the 1990s and became prime minister in 1997, backed a left-wing coalition that unites the Socialists, Greens and France’s far-left during the 2022 parliamentary election campaign.
But he warned against French leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s disruptive political strategy shortly after the election, warning of its damaging effects on the far left in an interview with The world.
Jospin’s death was announced the morning after local elections which sets the stage for the 2027 presidential race, when the left is weakened by a deep division among moderates over whether to unite with A dominant but increasingly toxic Mélenchon it can’t be avoided – or risk it sink the left ship.
