Ghana said France is ready to hold talks with a coalition of nations calling for reparations for transatlantic slavery, following last week’s meeting with President Emmanuel Macron.
Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, accompanied by Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and other officials, held talks with Macron in Paris on Wednesday.
Ablakwa said in X after the meeting that Macron showed France is ready for discussions on reparations, including the return of looted works of art, addressing global economic inequality and breaking structural discrimination.
An official from the Élysée Palace said on Sunday that both countries discussed France’s efforts to recover important cultural objects and human remains, as well as legal frameworks regarding this recovery.

The official did not mention the additional measures mentioned by Ablakwa.
The meeting followed the UN’s adoption last month of a Ghana-led resolution recognizing slavery as “the gravest crime against humanity” and calling for reparations.
