Hong Kong class half-marathon achieves platinum status, now the city’s top class race

The Bank of China Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge Half Marathon has been designated a platinum event by World Athletics, making it the highest rated race in Hong Kong.

According to the world governing body’s calendar for this season, the event has been upgraded from gold to the November edition.

Platinum is the highest level of race accreditation and gives it a higher ranking than the prestigious Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon, which is in the gold category.

This year’s race is scheduled for November 15, and will cover a distance of 13.1 miles (21 km) on the Hong Kong section of the bridge.

Kwan Kee, chairman of Hong Kong race organisers, the China Association of Athletics Partners, welcomed the upgrade, and it reflected the prestige the international athletics community placed on the competition.

“This shows our race has reached a certain level of credibility,” Kwan said. “We started applying for the platinum label earlier this year and were successful after going through multiple rounds of evaluation with World Athletics.”
