Human remains are found on a Thai ship attacked by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz

Human remains have been found aboard a cargo ship shot down by Iran while crossing the Strait of Hormuz last month, the ship’s owner said on Friday, after three crew members were reported missing following the attack.

The attacks by the United States and Israel against Iran at the end of February prompted Tehran to respond by closing the Strait of Hormuz, an important artery for the world’s oil supply.

The Thai-flagged Mayuree Naree was hit in March while traveling through the strait after leaving the port of Khalifa in the United Arab Emirates.

“Some human remains were found inside the affected area of the ship,” a statement from the shipping company Precious Shipping said on Friday, adding that it could not yet confirm the identity or number of individuals.

The 20 Thai crew returned home in mid-March, while three of their colleagues were missing and thought to be stuck in a damaged engine compartment.

The search was carried out under “difficult conditions” as the ship’s engine room was flooded and destroyed by fire, the company said.
