Iran has allowed two former French prisoners, Cecile Kohler and Jacques Paris, to leave the country, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday. They had been held in French diplomatic facilities there since their release from prison.
“Cecile Kohler and Jacques Paris are free and on their way to French territory, after three and a half years of detention in Iran,” Macron posted on social media.
The green light for them to leave Iran, long sought by France, showed how Iran differentiates between nations, treating some as benefactors and others as enemies, in the context of the Iran war.
Macron has distanced France from the conflict, saying his country was not consulted in advance about the US and Israeli attacks and does not want war.

Macron thanked Oman for playing a mediating role in Kohler’s release from Paris. “It is a relief for all of us and it is clear for their families,” Macron wrote.
