Israel’s attacks on Lebanon require an urgent legal investigation, says the UN, as hundreds of thousands flee

The United Nations on Friday demanded an urgent investigation into Israel’s deadly attacks across Lebanon to determine whether they followed international law.

“The dire consequences of this new conflict are already in front of our eyes, with civilians paying a heavy price,” UN rights office spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani told reporters in Geneva.

“We call on the relevant parties to step back from the brink of escalating this conflict in Lebanon.”

His comments came as new Israeli attacks hit Lebanon, where Prime Minister Nawaf Salam warned a “humanitarian catastrophe is imminent” due to the mass exodus.

Shamdasani warned that “Israel’s military incursion in southern Lebanon, orders to evacuate people in the southern suburbs of Beirut, the Bekaa area and the entire area south of the Litani river, and the continuation of its airstrikes in different parts of the country, bring more sadness and suffering to the already tired residents”.
