North Korea has conducted several tests of advanced weapons technology as it tries to expand its arsenal with electromagnetic weapons, carbon fiber bombs, and new air defense systems, state news agency KCNA reports.
The investigation was conducted over a period of three days. Kim Jong-sik, the general who oversaw the tests, described the electromagnetic system and carbon fiber bombs as “special property” in the country’s arsenal, but gave few details about the nature of the new weapons.
The South Korean military has said it detected several missile launches from North Korea. The planes flew 240 to 700 kilometers, according to Reuters.
‘Deactivated’ carbon fiber bombs are designed to scatter graphite-filled fibers over power grids and power plants to induce short circuits. A non-nuclear electromagnetic pulse (EMP) weapon is another type of device also intended to disable electronic circuits in military assets such as radar systems and aircraft. According to KCNA, the tests also involved the new cluster warhead of the Hwasong-11, a nuclear-capable missile.
The tests came amid rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula. First Vice Foreign Minister Jang Kum-chol described South Korea as a country “enemy enemy state” in a statement on Tuesday.
Earlier this week, Seoul apologized to Pyongyang over the drone strike, denying any official involvement and claiming the launch was a private initiative. Three people — including an employee of the National Intelligence Service, a South Korean military officer, and a graduate student — are facing charges.
Relations have been stalled since 2019, following the breakdown of nuclear talks between Pyongyang and Washington. The talks were initiated by US President Donald Trump during his first term in office.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said last month that nuclear weapons capable of posing a credible threat to the United States are the only way to confront the United States. “terrorism and aggression.” He has also said that North Korea will not give up its nuclear weapons and will oppose any efforts to challenge its status.
