Olympic champion diver Quan Hongchan says she is a victim of cyberbullying about her body

Olympic champion diver Quan Hongchan has revealed that she is the victim of cyberbullying about her body, saying it has left her feeling “antagonistic and dissatisfied” with her body and she wishes she could be her former self.

In an interview published Monday, the diving star discussed the pressures and confusion of entering adulthood. Quan, who turned 19 in March, noted that weight has been her biggest struggle as an adult.

“People keep saying I’m too heavy,” he said. “I’m afraid of that level now because a lot of people say I’m fat.”

Since the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she won gold in the women’s 10-meter platform, Quan has experienced a growth spurt, growing 10cm (3.9 inches) to 1.58m (5 feet, 2 inches) and gaining an average of 8 kilograms (17.6 lbs).

In diving, a very weight-sensitive sport, even small changes are important.

During the 2025 World Cup season, he was repeatedly labeled as “fat” online, causing what he described as a “psychological shadow”.
