Thomas Detry will battle Jon Rahm for the LIV Golf Hong Kong title on Sunday, but he might not even be in that position without the Spaniard’s help.
Detry was one of seven players Rahm flew to Oman to rescue after being stranded in Dubai by the US-Israel war against Iran.
Now the duo, along with Harold Varner III, are tied for 17th at the top of the leaderboard, two shots behind Carlos Ortiz, Dean Burmester and Thomas Pieters.
“The way I see it, it was my responsibility,” Rahm said. “I was brought up with certain values, and if you have the ability and ability to help someone, especially in a situation like that, where my main goal was to get them out of there, not to play tournaments.”
Rahm’s Legion XIII teammates Caleb Surratt and Tom McKibbin were also in the group, and he admitted it looked “dark for a second”.

The Ryder Cup star said he told 22-year-old Surratt to “forget we’re playing a tournament” as the goal was to get everyone to safety.
