The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) said on Monday it had not received any notice from Iran that it would withdraw its national team from the World Cup.
Iran has qualified for the 48-team tournament that will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11, and they are scheduled to play two group matches in Los Angeles and one in Seattle.
The Minister of Sports of Iran has said that it is impossible for the players to participate in the tournament after the United States carried out airstrikes with Israel against Tehran and killed the leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
US President Donald Trump said last week Iran was invited to participate in the World Cup but believes it was wrong to be there “for their lives and safety”.
“It’s a very emotional time. Everyone is saying a lot of things,” Windsor John, AFC general secretary, said in Kuala Lumpur.
“At the end of the day, it is the federation that has to decide if they play, and until today, the federation has told us that they are going to the World Cup.
