I will say that I think this product could be smarter in a few situations. If you like to dye your own extensions, or you keep changing the color of the streak and don’t need to buy full color containers, or you’re a parent with kids who are always dying their bleached ends, then it might make sense. And the resulting product does not smell good. I also like the included container that allows you to store leftover paint. If you’re looking for washed out, pastel tones, I still think you should … get a hair color and lighten it with a conditioner.

In the end, according to my assessment, the product fails to do its job. And even if this situation improves—even if eventually, you can find black to help darken the shadows, or Zuvi moves from using primary colors to using blue, magenta and yellow, or the company starts to simplify the process of bleaching your hair at home, or the use of AI in production stops and Zuvi starts to stand behind its own results … cartridges, which will all be paper if the company folds.
I have gone through every single result I can find of other reviews on the Internet. I’m not a licensed cosmetologist, but I’ve been coloring my hair for about 20 years, and I’ve yet to see results that are more impressive than what a consumer could get for less money from a local beauty supply. Semipermanent fashion colors are available in hundreds and hundreds of shades, all of which can be mixed together. It may take trial and error to dial your pink or blue or red phone, but it can be done without a machine. Your beauty supply store probably has an associate who has been coloring her hair for decades and will be happy to point you in the right direction. And with all due respect, if you can’t figure out color theory or add a little conditioner to get rid of your own color, maybe you should go to a professional and save yourself the trouble of doing it wrong. Zuvi ColorBox adds more randomness instead of removing it.
While I like the low initial price, color correction from a professional is very expensive, and refill cartridges from Zuvi (about $22 each) can easily cost as much as the kit would cost to dye your hair with products from a local beauty supply, especially if your hair is long, thick, and/or curly. And I like the idea of reducing the remaining paint waste, but again, you don’t need to buy a device for that.
