Triple Olympic gold medalist Quan Hongchan may miss the Asian Games in September after an injury forced him out of China’s national team trials this weekend.
According to the list of participants released on Thursday, Quan will not participate in the selection meeting. He has reportedly been battling tibia and ankle problems for several months.
Officials said the two-course trials, which will take place this weekend, and run from June 11 to 13, will be an “important basis” for selecting the country’s squad for the Games in Japan.
The 19-year-old’s province, Guangdong, had already said at the end of April that he was “in an injury recovery period”.
The Guangdong Ersha Sports Training Center said at the time that Quan was in no condition to compete and would “focus more on his studies and miss all competitions in the first half of the year”.
Quan won her first Olympic gold in the women’s 10m platform at the 2021 Tokyo Games at the age of 14, and added two more in the women’s individual platform and 10m synchronized in Paris three years later, but has been plagued by injuries in recent seasons.
