Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was backed by the leaders of Britain, France and Germany in calling for direct talks on a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, according to a joint statement issued following defense talks in London on Sunday.
Zelensky met British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at 10 Downing Street for talks as the Russia war enters its fifth year.
The leaders “supported the proposal for direct talks between Ukraine and Russia – with the active participation of the United States and Europe – to bring about a ceasefire and support further talks”, they said in a joint statement with Zelensky.
“The current communication channel should be the starting point for dialogue,” it said.
“International borders should not be changed by force.”
Zelensky proposed a one-on-one meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in an open letter on Thursday.
