The head of the World Health Organization on Monday visited Uganda, where a serious outbreak of Ebola has killed two people after spreading from the neighboring country of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The WHO has declared an international health emergency due to the current outbreak, which was announced on May 15 in northeastern DRC.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus recently also visited the DRC, which has seen 515 Ebola infections, including 91 deaths, according to the United Nations health organization.
“I am in Uganda, where the government has put in place a rapid and effective response to the Ebola outbreak,” Tedros wrote on X.
“Border surveillance helped detect cases arriving from neighboring DRC, and the country’s surveillance, testing and case management systems are working rapidly.”
The head of the WHO earlier on Monday met with the senior official of the Ministry of Health of Uganda, the spokesperson of the WHO in Geneva said.
