While Lionel Messi made headlines by scoring a hat-trick in Argentina’s victory over Algeria, Ronaldo failed to score and led many to boo him due to his poor performance.
Now, former England striker Michael Owen has come to the defense of the Portugal captain, according to Goal.com.

What did Michael Owen say?
Speaking to The Daily Mail, Owen firmly said it is unfair to judge Ronaldo in the same way as before because he has changed his role on the field. “The fact that Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick the day before the Portugal match worked against Ronaldo, but I don’t accept the blame given to him. In recent years, Cristiano has completely changed his style of play and become a real ‘poacher’ in the penalty area.”
Owen added, “He’s never been a player who actively participates in the build-up game, especially at the end of his career. When he doesn’t score, it’s very easy to blame him.”
The former footballer says he is confident Ronaldo will soon show his ‘killer’ instinct and silence his critics.

Following the match, Ronaldo posted a photo of himself with the caption, “Not the start we wanted, but this is far from over. Come and focus on the next game.”
For those who don’t know, Portugal’s next match is against Uzbekistan. It is a Group K match that will take place on June 23, 2026, at the Houston Stadium. On June 27, they will face Colombia on June 27, 2026.
