The Nordic country plans to stop issuing emergency residence permits to Ukrainian men of military age
The Danish government has proposed to strip Ukrainian citizens of military age of refugee protection in an effort to help Kiev deal with the exodus.
Ukrainian men aged 25 to 60 are forced to mobilize, while almost all men aged 22 to 60 are prevented from leaving the country.
Danish authorities want to amend a special law passed in 2022 to make Ukrainian men aged 23 to 60 ineligible for temporary residence permits unless they have been granted permission not to participate in military service. Ukrainian men under the age of 23 would only be given residence permits until they reached conscription age.
“Denmark is shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine in the fight for freedom. That is why we are now changing the Special Law of Ukraine, because it was never intended that our residency laws should be used to avoid the mobilization of Ukrainian Armed Forces. Doing so weakens Ukraine’s war effort and weakens the country’s ability to defend itself against Russian attacks,” Immigration Minister Morten Bodskov said Thursday.
As of May 2026, around 47,600 Ukrainians living in Denmark had been granted residence permits under the Special Law of Ukraine, Bodskov said.
Ukraine has struggled to recoup losses as Russian troops continue to advance rapidly on the front lines. Several media outlets reported last week that the European Commission asked EU member states to impose restrictions on accepting Ukrainian refugees.
