A serial domestic violence offender who was released on bail after pleading guilty to a brutal attack on a Perth woman cut off his ankle restraints and ran, sparking a police chase.
Guy Leslie Cramp, 33, was arrested and charged earlier this year with the fatal attack on the mother of his infant son at his Stratton property.
His victim, Chloe Wright, released CCTV footage of the attack which left her with a broken nose and broken cheekbone in a bid to raise awareness of how domestic violence offenders are dealt with by the courts after Cramp was released on bail despite pleading guilty.
Cramp then became a statewide manhunt after he cut off his ankle monitor on Friday evening, weeks after he failed to complete a DV offender program that was part of his bail conditions.
Today understands the leg bag was found in dense bush near the RAAF airfield at Bullsbrook where Cramp lives.
Wright said he was called by police in the rural WA town where he fled after being released on bail hours after he cut off the ankle monitor.
Wright campaigned for tougher sentences for domestic violence offenders after Cramp was released on bail after it was revealed she was his third female victim. Cramp also has prior convictions for breaching bail and other assaults.
His release also sparked strong criticism from the government’s opposition, with Libby Mettam criticizing the criminal justice system.
“This is a government that talks tough when it comes to domestic and family violence offenders, but the ground truth is a soft touch,” Mettam said.
“Quite frankly, our criminal justice system is broken. The current system is the current system is broken. It puts the freedom of criminals before the safety of victims.
“It’s very bad. This is very shocking, and I don’t think there is a single person in the community who can believe what is happening here, and for the attorney general to just pardon in this way is also inexcusable.”
Cramp was arrested on Saturday and will appear in court again on Sunday morning.
