US eases ban on AI Mythos feared to aid cyberattacks

The US government has allowed Anthropic to release its powerful Claude Mythos 5 intelligence model to some “trusted” US agencies, partially reversing an order two weeks ago to freeze access due to national security risks.

More than 100 companies and institutions will now receive Mythos 5 services, including many Fortune 500 companies, according to a source familiar with the new guidance, who could not be identified due to the sensitivity of the matter.

Concerns that powerful AI systems could be misused by military intelligence users in China, Russia or other concerned countries have led the administration of US President Donald Trump to take a tougher approach to managing the release of Anthropic Frontiers models by rival OpenAI.

OpenAI said earlier Friday that it was delaying the full public launch of GPT-5.6 at the request of the US government, limiting its access to a small group of vetted partners whose details were shared with authorities.
