Iran said it targeted targets linked to US forces on Saturday in response to US airstrikes on its southern coast, as each side continued to accuse the other of violating last week’s agreement meant to end the four-month war.
Iran’s foreign ministry did not specify the locations of its “defensive” strikes, which it said were in response to “brutal attacks” by the United States on its coastal surveillance facilities, which it said also violated the UN Charter.
Later, Bahrain, which hosts the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet, condemned what it said was an Iranian drone strike on its soil as a clear violation of its sovereignty and a threat to its security, adding that it has the right to self-defense.
Washington did not immediately respond to Iran’s report of targeting US targets, a tactic that has sought to weaken US allies in the region during the conflict. The US military said its strikes on Friday were in response to an Iranian drone attack on a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway critical to the world’s energy supply.
Iran confirms control of the sea
In another move, Israel and Lebanon signed a cease-fire agreement between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah. Both sides said the agreement is an initial step that calls for Hezbollah to disarm and Israel to withdraw its troops from Lebanon, but it is not clear how it will be implemented. Hezbollah said it would not cooperate.
