French Open finalist Maja Chwalinska suffered a shock first-round Wimbledon loss to Thailand’s Mananchaya Sawangkaew on Monday after suffering an injury on match point, while China’s top-ranked women’s player, Wang Xinyu, safely advanced to the next round.
World No. 39 Wang, who lost in the semifinals of the Bad Homburg Open to Naomi Osaka last week, defeated Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-3, 2-6, 6-2. She will face 11th seed Belinda Bencic from Switzerland in the next round.
Another Chinese player, world number 64 Zhang Shuai, also advanced to the second round after defeating Canada’s Bianca Andreescu in straight sets 7-6, 7-6.
Zhang will next face the winner of the match between Czech 10th seed Karolina Muchova and Russia’s Anastasia Zakharova.
Just weeks after her legendary run as a qualifier at Roland Garros, Chwalinska was unable to recapture her clay court magic on the grass at the All England Club.

The 20-seeded Pole, beaten by Mirra Andreeva in the French Open final, took the first set against Sawangkaew, but collapsed in the final two sets as the world number 164 grabbed a memorable 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory.
