A Labor state MP was assaulted and required emergency surgery after he intervened to save a woman who was being attacked and kicked in the face.
Footscray Labor MP Katie Hall spoke to Age Friday about the attack he witnessed outside his constituency office on June 25.
Hall said that at lunch that day, he saw a man drive past him and collided with two women who were walking in the opposite direction in Nicholson Street, Footscray. One of the women fell to the ground, and the man kicked her in the head until Hall moved to stop him.
Like that member of parliament called for help, then the man head-butted Hall, knocking him down and damaging the nerves in his arm so much that he needed emergency surgery.
Hall said he called Triple Zero and followed the man around the corner to Footscray station, where he was arrested by police.
Victoria Police have been contacted about the incident.
Hall, who has been a member of Footscray since 2018, said he was grateful to the emergency services and bystanders who helped him.
“There were many good people who stopped to help, including one gentleman who helped me in making sure the criminal was found and arrested,” he said.
“I thank Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria for their quick action and care.”
Hall said a crime like the attack he witnessed was unacceptable.
“My only thought was to stop the act of violence and protect the woman who is being attacked senselessly,” he said.
“I have absolutely no tolerance for this happening to anyone in my community.
“I believe that thug is now where he should be – in custody.”
The suspect is being held in custody before being brought to court this month.
