The Devils will return to Melbourne with a win from their first trip to Launceston, but will be proud to drop a pile of points following Hawthorn’s comeback.
The Dees led by 96 points at one stage before the Hawks kicked 11 goals in a row to somehow give themselves an outside chance of victory.
But Bayley Fritsch and Jacob van Rooyen scored late goals to ensure they won. They were among the best of the day.
Jacob van Rooyen’s five goals were a new lease of life, while Max Gawn was brilliant on the ruck.
Hawks freshman Noah Mraz had an impressive debut with 12 points, six interceptions and 16 defensive rebounds.
