Fifa World Cup: Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz opposes African sanctions after losing to Colombia

Carlos Queiroz believes African football is “far away” from being crowned its first World Cup winner, after his Ghana side were knocked out in their last 32 match 1-0 by Colombia in Kansas City on Saturday.

Of the nine African teams that qualified from the group stage, only Morocco and Egypt survived the first knockout round following penalty shootout victories over the Netherlands and Australia, respectively.

Morocco, a semi-finalist in Qatar four years ago, beat Canada 3-0 in their last-16 match to advance to the quarter-finals in Boston against France, the team that knocked them out of the top four in 2022.

Appointed in April, after Otto Addo’s disastrous two-year reign, former Real Madrid coach Queiroz has also coached South Africa and Egypt.

“African football is far from reaching its destiny (of winning the World Cup), and a lot has to be done so that it can be at the level it deserves,” the Portuguese Queiroz said.

“Football is not only about talent, it is about having an environment to develop talent.

“There is great potential when you talk about footballers, but there are differences from countries in Europe, South America, North Africa and Asia. All continents are different but in Africa there are no better facilities or coaches, or better training grounds.”
