England produced a great defensive effort to beat Mexico in a thrilling, hard-fought, five-goal game at the Azteca Stadium on Sunday.
Jude Bellingham scored twice in two minutes, and Harry Kane also scored from the penalty spot as the Three Lions overcame Jarell Quansah’s red card, height and home help to continue their quest for a first major league win in 60 years.
England has relied on Bellingham and Kane throughout the tournament and the two have carried them in the last eight against Erling Haaland’s Norway.
Bellingham scored twice in 98 seconds in the first half to condemn Mexico to just its third loss in 90 games at the Azteca.
“It’s the best night of my football career in England. Just amazing. I can’t put it into words right now,” Bellingham said.
“It’s hard to put everything together, goals, penalties against, red cards. It was a chaotic game, but for Mexico, they were in a different class… but this team showed character tonight and I’m proud of it.”
Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez reduced Mexico’s deficit, but missed out on a place in the quarterfinals.
