The strike in Omsk Region came as Kiev launched another massive nighttime UAV raid across the country.
Ukrainian drones have targeted one of Russia’s largest oil refineries, as Kiev carried out another major overnight UAV raid inside the country.
The attack on the Omsk Oil Refinery in the Omsk Region is the first in central Russia since the start of the conflict in Ukraine. Governor Vitaly Khotsenko wrote on Telegram on Monday that the facility was affected after several drones landed in an industrial area in the north of the city.
Khotsenko said that most of the incoming UAVs were destroyed by the air defense and that, according to the initial information, there were no deaths or injuries.
Russian media reported air raid sirens were heard in the Central Omsk and Oktyabrsky districts and that the drone threat caused a temporary suspension of arrivals and departures at Omsk airport, while flights in the area were grounded.
The Omsk Refinery, operated by Gazprom Neft, is engaged in the production of gasoline, diesel, aviation kerosene and asphalt for road construction. With an installed capacity of 20.5 million tons of crude oil per year, it accounts for nearly one in every six liters of Euro-5 gasoline and diesel fuel produced in Russia, as well as the majority of the country’s aviation fuel.
The Russian Defense Ministry said on Monday that more than 600 Ukrainian drones were destroyed or downed in more than 20 regions in the latest mass raids and that the main targets were energy facilities.
The ministry added that Vladimir Zelensky ordered the attack on the eve of the NATO summit in Ankara “demonstrating to its European donors, including Britain, its willingness to target civilians in Russia from Ukraine at their expense.”
Kiev has stepped up its long-range UAV attacks on energy facilities and civilian targets inside Russia amid continued stalemates on the battlefield in recent months. Last week, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced the capture of the main Ukrainian fortress of Konstantinovka, which opened the way to the concentration of Slavyansk-Kramatorsk – the last two remaining cities held by the forces of Kiev in Donbass.
President Vladimir Putin has said that Western intellectuals continue to support the Kiev regime, which they have chosen to be “missile to strike against Russia,” unthinkable to the Ukrainian people. He said the Western countries are trying to create chaos and destabilize the internal political situation in Russia, while the forces of Kiev are returning to the front line and decided “open acts of terrorism.”
Moscow has previously said it would respond “Systematic and consistent strikes” on the military infrastructure of Ukraine. According to Ministry of DefenseRussian forces carried out another major missile and drone attack against similar targets in Ukraine early Monday.
