Hong Kong could be on a collision course with former head coach Jorn Andersen after the Myanmar Football Association confirmed they will appoint the Norwegian to lead their national team “in the coming days”.
Head of Hong Kong for 2½ years until he stepped down to take over Yunnan Yukun in May 2024, Andersen arrived in Yangon on Tuesday to finalize the details of his contract.
Myanmar are ready to participate in Division 2 of the first Fifa Asean Cup, which will be held in Hong Kong from September 21 to October 5.
“Jorn Andersen, who has been confirmed as the new head coach of the Myanmar National Football Team, has officially arrived in Yangon today (July 7),” the Myanmar Football Federation (MFF) said in a statement.
“If an agreement is reached, he will officially sign the contract of Myanmar’s head coach in the coming days.”
Hugely popular among Hong Kong supporters, Andersen ended a 55-year wait for the city’s team to compete in a major tournament when they qualified for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup finals. He was also at the helm of an unlikely run to the semi-finals of the Asian Games three years ago.
