Ronaldo’s relationship with the World Cup spans two decades, starting in 2006 when he was 21 years old with a new face. Flash forward to 2026and leaves as a record breaker, having played in six tournaments, more than any player in history, and scoring in each. Reflecting on his last World Cup, Ronaldo did not hide his feelings. He described the tournament as “the most amazing,” adding, “This is the World Cup I’ll remember the most, because of the passion of the people. It’s more this time, I don’t know why. It’s been, emotionally, the best. I’ve really enjoyed it.”

Despite spending a lot of time in his World Cup matches, Ronaldo has made one thing clear, he is not done with football yet. Speaking ahead of Portugal’s clash with Spain, he said, “It’s about having as much fun as possible. This will be my last World Cup, but let’s hope tomorrow is not my last game.” Currently, Ronaldo plays for Al-Nasrwith his contract running until June 2027. So while the international chapter may be closing, the game at club level is far from over.
‘The Day Will Come,’ but not today
Ronaldo has not shied away from admitting the inevitable. Retirement, he admits, is on the horizon, just not immediately. “The day will come,” he said, before adding confidently, “Whatever happens tomorrow, Cristiano will leave with a clear conscience, not 100%, but 1,000%. Because I have given everything in football.” And if anyone doubted his impact, Ronaldo had a cheeky reminder: “I’ve scored three goals (for this World Cup), I’m not doing too bad, right?”
Interestingly, Ronaldo has also changed in the way he makes big decisions. After Portugal’s previous victory over Croatia, he avoided giving a definite answer about his future with the national team. “I don’t make rash decisions anymore; now I take everything calmly. For now, it’s about enjoying today,” he said.
Is Cristiano Ronaldo retiring? Still, and if Ronaldo plays one or more seasons, his legacy is untouchable.
