Dutch media reported several incidents after Moroccan fans took to the streets in several cities on Thursday night, following their team’s 2-0 loss to France in the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
Fans threw glass bottles at police, prompting anti-riot officers to disperse the crowd, according to the daily. Telegraph. In Rotterdam, police were pelted with eggs, while rioters in Amsterdam reportedly threw fireworks at law enforcement and antagonized journalists.
Yeşilgöz is known for his radical stance on immigration. “There are too many people coming to our country,” he said he wrote on X last year, before becoming a minister. “This has to be different. And fast too.”
Dutch far-right leader Geert Wilders also weighed in, to accuse Yeşilgöz’s VVD party – which is part of the ruling coalition, along with Prime Minister Rob Jetten’s liberal D66 party and the right-wing Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) party – for allowing “filth” into the country.
This is not the first time chaos has occurred after the Morocco match. Following the victory of Morocco against the Netherlands in the 32nd round, the police in The Hague 13 people were arrested on suspicion of public harassment or disturbing public order. Early in the year, after the chaos associated with the final of the African Cup of Nations, the authorities in The Hague detained another 14 people.
