A group of white Democratic pastors have a surprising message ahead of the November US midterm elections: Republicans have hijacked Jesus for political gain, and we will not stand for it.
For decades, it’s been a fact that Republicans have tapped into the Christian market — at least when it comes to white voters.
But these ministers are so fed up with the President of the United States, Donald Trump, and especially his policies against immigrants, that they are running as Democrats in November to control him.
“The Christians we hear in Washington do not resemble the Jesus of the Gospel,” one of the rebels, Adam Hamilton, said.
As the head of a 24,000-member Methodist church in rural Kansas with a population of 24,000, Hamilton would normally fit the profile of a right-wing Christian Republican.
However, in addition to supporting fiscal responsibility and a strong military, the 62-year-old Hamilton is supporting legal access to abortion and protecting LGBTQ rights in his campaign for the US Senate.
