‘Fake World Cup’ row escalates after Lionel Messi points finger at referee in heated altercation

England’s Breel Donald Embolo, who struggled with visa issues earlier in the tournament, ended his campaign in tears, a poignant image that summed up the night in Switzerland.

FIFA responds, but questions remain

As the outcry grew online, FIFA stepped in to provide clarification. Referee chief Pierluigi Collina stressed that “no one can question the integrity” of the officials and that “baseless claims have no place in our game.”
