Argentina’s 3-1 extra-time victory over Switzerland was not just about qualifying for a semi-final clash against England. It caused a wave of outrage, conspiracy theories, and one involving viral moment Lionel Messi that fans can not stop analyzing. From heated arguments on the field to harsh accusations against him, the feud quickly escalated into a conspiracy that ‘FIFA is stolen.’
The controversy started when Messi, Argentinacaptain and talisman, was caught in a heated argument with Portuguese referee Joรฃo Pinheiro during the game. While he seemed annoyed by the official’s voice, Messi did not hesitate. “Don’t underestimate me,” he is said to have told her while pointing at the employer. “Speak well to me. Do not despise me. Speak well to me; I spoke well to you.” The cameras captured every second of it, and within minutes, videos of the conversation flooded social media, fueling claims that Messi was influencing the referee.

If Messi’s fight sparked debate, the real fire came in the second half. With the game level in the 72nd minute, Swiss striker Breel Embolo was shown a second yellow card after Evaluation of VAR he decided he had dived instead of being fouled by Leandro Paredes. The decision, made under the new “misidentification” law, left Switzerland stunned.
The reaction from the Swiss camp was furious as Manuel Akanji said, “Every little thing was called against us” and “I have never experienced a one-sided game.” Manager Murat Yakin went further, calling the referee “incomprehensible.” Captain Granit Xhaka issued a stern warning, “The rules are the rules, we can’t change them. But with a decision like this, they are killing football, that’s my opinion. I’m begging you: Don’t kill the game!”
‘This competition is fixed’ opposition is growing
Switzerland’s anger only added fuel to an already burning fire because a few days earlier, Egypt had made similar accusations after withdrawing against Argentina. Winger Mostafa Ziko claimed, “This competition has been fixed,” while coach Hossam Hassan insisted, “It’s all about money. They want Messi to stay in the tournament. In soccer, many things happen outside the field because of interests. What happened was not fair. Egypt deserved to qualify. We were the best team.” With many teams now questioning the decisions, internet chatter exploded into a full blown conspiracy that Argentina, led by Messi, were favored heading into the final.

With 10 men, Switzerland held on bravely until the 112th minute, when Julian รlvarez scored a stunning goal. Lautaro Martรญnez then sealed the deal in extra time, ending Switzerland’s hopes and sending Argentina through. England’s Breel Donald Embolo, who struggled with visa issues earlier in the tournament, ended his campaign in tears, a poignant image that summed up the night in Switzerland.

FIFA responds, but questions remain
As the outcry grew online, FIFA stepped in to provide clarification. Referee chief Pierluigi Collina stressed that “no one can question the integrity” of the officials and that “baseless claims have no place in our game.”
Now, Argentina enters a blockbuster semi-final against England, but not without baggage. Between the Messi fight, the controversial red card, and the many criticisms from many teams, their World Cup has taken a huge hit.
Why are they even asking, isn’t messi the one who controls everything in fifa?
