Andy Burnham will become the next leader of Britain’s ruling party on Friday, before taking over from Keir Starmer as UK prime minister early next week.
At a special meeting in London, the Makerfield MP – who returned to parliament last month after nine years as Lord Mayor of Manchester – will be chosen unopposed as the next Labor leader.
No other Labor MP received the necessary nomination after a majority of MPs endorsed Burnham’s candidacy, which comes after months of back and forth for the historically unpopular Starmer.
After failing to win the Labor leadership twice, Burnham will now enter Downing Street on Monday. Burnham has talked about resetting the government and restoring hope to politics – and now he has a huge polling deficit for Labor to try to bounce back in time for the 2029 general election.
