The US military on Saturday announced the first deaths of US soldiers from direct Iranian attacks since the early days of the war, saying two were killed and another was missing in an attack on a base in Jordan.
They were killed on Friday as US and allied forces defended themselves against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks, the statement said. Four other crew members who were medically evacuated to Jordanian hospitals were later released. The dead were not identified.
Since the war began, 16 American service members have now been killed and more than 430 wounded.
Minutes earlier, Iran’s supreme leader had warned of “unforgettable lessons” if the US continued to attack the Islamic Republic.
The remarks read on national television and attributed to Mojtaba Khamenei, who has not been seen since the war began, also called the signature of US President Donald Trump “worthless and invalid”.
The comments came hours after the negotiator said Tehran was suspending its commitments to an interim deal signed about a month ago.
