Spain overtook Argentina for 1st place in the Fifa men’s world rankings on Monday, as expected after Red beat the defending champions 1-0 in the World Cup final on Sunday.
Argentina was the No. 1 team in the world rankings as of the last updated rankings on June 11, the day the 48-team World Cup kicked off in Mexico. The tournament featured 104 matches played across Canada, Mexico and the United States.
Spain entered the tournament in 2nd place.
France and England remain at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, despite England’s 6-4 win over the French in the World Cup third-place match. France still had enough cushion in the overall score line to absorb the defeat.
Brazil and Morocco leapfrogged Portugal to No. 5 and No. 6. Portugal lost 1-0 to regional rivals Spain in the round of 16.
Mexico climbed four places to No. 10 after a strong showing at the World Cup. They won all three games in the group stage, beating Ecuador 2-0 in the round of 32 before England knocked them out with a 3-2 win in the next round in Mexico City.
