Rugable Pamir Ivory Washable Rug: I love this washable rug because it is durable, looks good, and is very easy to clean. A rug is one of the easiest ways to make a room feel more grown-up, and it won’t break the bank.
AmazonBasics 3-Tier Utility Cart: I use this utility cart in my kitchen, and I’m about to get another one for my bathroom. It’s easy to put together and makes good use of vertical storage space. Use it to organize school supplies, toiletries, equipment, or anything else that takes up space in half of your dorm room.
BenQ ScreenBar PC LED Light: WIRE Editor Julian Chokkattu swears by this desk lamp, which only works if you have an external monitor on your desk. It hangs above the screen and illuminates your workspace. Best of all, it takes up zero space on your desk!
Monoprice Extra Wide Microfiber Desk Mat: This mat is soft and doubles as a mouse pad, which is great for students who use separate keyboards and mice.
Ikea Skubb Storage Case: While a former WIRED reviewer Medea Giordano lived in a small NYC apartment, she kept four storage bins under her bed to hold every item of clothing her closet couldn’t hold. The same technique works well for college beds, which generally have plenty of space underneath. These cases can hold outdoor clothing, shoes, or anything else you may need, such as party supplies. Amazon has a bunch of similar options.
Dalykate Backpack Laundry Bag: One reality of dorm life is that you may need to lug your dirty laundry down a few flights to the laundry room. This hamper has a pocket to hold your soap and purse straps for portability, and it’s not as heavy as a laundry basket. He is the editor of WIRED Julian Chokkattu he uses to go to his laundry.
Crocs Classic Clogs: You need a pair of bathing shoes. Trust me when I say that you do not want to deal with athlete’s foot in a college dorm. These crocs are my favorite for rain showers—they don’t bother getting in, they’re easy to slip off when you’re balancing on one foot to wash your feet, and they dry quickly, too. Alternatively, you can go with a special pair of flip-flops or slides. And don’t forget a shower caddy for your toilets!
Govee RGBIC LED Light Strip: String lights are great, but this one light belt from Govee it’s more fun. You can easily adjust color and brightness using a smartphone app, and you can dim the lights to suit the space.
Basic cleaning equipment: I didn’t realize how many things I was forgetting when I first moved into my bedroom. Make sure you remember important household items, such as laundry detergent, paper towels, dish soap, disinfectant wipesand washing clothes. You may also want a little broom and pan.
