Deputy Prime Minister Ben Carroll has advised the Prime Minister that he intends to be a leadership candidate in the event of a spill.
A group of ministers and MPs met with Jacinta Allan this morning and asked her to stand down.
Following the meeting, they met with Carroll and urged him to step forward as a competitor.
Carroll then advised the Prime Minister that he would do so in the event of a spillover, likely to occur at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday.
Among those in the delegation were ministers Anthony Carbines, Gabrielle Williams, Ingrid Stitt, Lizzie Blandthorn, Luba Grigorovitch, Colin Brooks, and group conveners Ella George and Mat Hilakari.
Three Labor sources confirmed the meeting to Age.
A member of parliament said that the members included “ministers and MPs from various groups” and had gone to see the Prime Minister “to inform him that he has lost a lot of support in the cabinet meeting and they have asked the Prime Minister to resign”.
Allan was defiant, telling lawmakers he had no intention of resigning.
A Labor source said “the number is too high”.
The Council of Ministers was scheduled to meet at 11 am but it will be greatly affected considering some of the attendees were part of the delegation.
Ministers have refused to resign from their positions.
