Hong Kong Coach Awards: Maurizio Zomparelli wins coach of the year award

Maurizio Zomparelli, mastermind of Ryan Choi Chun-yin’s historic fencing gold, was named coach of the year at the 2025 Hong Kong Coaches Awards on Saturday, sharing the top honor with Leung Suk-ying for his work in swimming (intellectual disability).

Both winners were unable to attend the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) event, with Zomparelli delivering his acceptance speech via video from overseas.

“No success is achieved alone,” Zomparelli said. “Everything we accomplished is the result of teamwork, a shared vision and the right commitment. Thank you to our athletes for their faith and for allowing us to be a part of their journey.”

Under the guidance of the Italian, Choi rose to the top of the world rankings last season after claiming his first title at the Shanghai Grand Prix. He surpassed that achievement by claiming the individual title from the FIE Fencing World Championships in July, becoming the first world fencing champion from the city.

The 28-year-old also won last year’s Asian Championships.

Choi, who is aiming for Olympic gold in 2028 which he has said will “complete my career”, will compete in the upcoming Foil World Cup in Egypt from April 16, after being delayed from this month due to the conflict in the Middle East.
