German pro-business party chief resigns after election fiasco – POLITICO

Despite all his regrets, Dürr told reporters that he and General Secretary Nicole Büttner will both run for re-election at the party’s meeting in May, where a new leader will be chosen. “I have already read in some media reports that the leadership of the FDP and I are giving up. I have no intention of giving up,” Dürr said.

At Monday’s party meeting Dürr offered to submit a vote of confidence to the party’s central board, but the board he refused. A new 40-member board will also be elected at the May meeting.

Dürr was elected to the leadership of the FDP in May 2025, succeeding long-time leader and former federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner.

Germany will hold five state elections in 2026, with Saxony-Anhalt, Berlin and Mecklenburg-West Pomerania voting in September.
