There will be major road closures in south-east Queensland for three weeks, including over Easter, and commuters will have to catch buses instead of trains.
The Story Bridge will also be fully or partially closed – impacting motorists and pedestrians – on various Easter school holiday dates for sub-surface concrete repair works and bridge inspections.
Translink is asking people to plan their journeys ahead of the train line closures from April 3 to April 26, with many routes affected.
The closures are required for work on major projects, including Cross River Rail, the first stage of the Beerburrum to Nambour railway, the Logan and Gold Coast high-speed rail, the relocation of Loganlea station, the European Train Control System and general track maintenance.
The disruption will fall within the two-week school holiday and the first week of term two.
From Good Friday, April 3, to Saturday, April 11, there will be major road closures affecting the Sunshine Coast, Caboolture, Redcliffe, Doomben, Shorncliffe, Airport, Gold Coast and Beenleigh routes.
From April 12 to 26, track closures will continue on the Beenleigh and Gold Coast lines only.
Buses will replace trains on the affected routes throughout this period.
Additional buses will be available, including express train and intercity buses, but authorities say for certain journeys, regular bus services may be the most convenient option for people traveling to and from the city.
NRL and AFL fans attending games during track closures have been asked to plan ahead and allow extra travel time.
The closure will affect travel to the Titans-Broncos match at Cbus Super Stadium on April 4 and the Broncos-Cowboys game at Suncorp Stadium on April 10.
Translink acting chief executive Dean Helm said the work was part of a major transformation of south-east Queensland’s rail network.
“We understand long-term track closures can be disruptive to customers,” he said.
“This is why we have coordinated work on multiple projects to be done at the same time to help minimize disruption time.
“While there is no ideal time for track closures, doing this during the school holidays minimizes the impact as fewer customers travel on the network at this time.”
Cross River Rail Delivery Authority CEO Graeme Newton said the work would include the removal and installation of rail and track equipment around Mayne station, platform demolition at Moorooka station, and testing and commissioning at the new Hope Island station on the Gold Coast.

Brisbane City Council has also advised one southbound lane on Story Bridge will be closed from 9pm on Thursday, April 2, until 9pm on Saturday, April 11.
There will be a full closure of the Story Bridge from 9pm on Saturday, April 11 until 1pm on Sunday, April 12.
One lane will be open in both directions on the Story Bridge from 1pm on Sunday, April 12 to 5am on Monday, April 13.
The closure will allow crews to repair the concrete slab below the road surface and inspect the bridge and perform other maintenance activities.
“These works are scheduled for the April Easter school holidays, when traffic volumes are low, and coincide with the closure of the bridge for the Tour de Brisbane cycling event,” the council’s website said.
There will also be temporary closures of the eastbound leg during the night.
The footpaths of the bridge were suddenly closed due to security concerns in March 2025, earlier re-opening for temporary decorationwhile the council says the full restoration of the bridge will be done in 15 to 20 years.
