This soil formed about 13,000 years ago at the end of the last period of melting when ice melted with salt water from the sea to form the Champlain Sea in what is now St. Lawrence and Ottawa Valleys, according to Marc Hinton, a hydrogeologist at the Geological Survey of Canada and Natural Resources Canada.
