Havana has condemned the US’s “strong blockade” against the island as a sign of Washington’s own weakness
US President Donald Trump has said that Cuba will follow while promoting it “success” of its military operations in Iran and Venezuela, while Washington continues to strangle Havana by blocking oil.
The threat comes despite Havana agreeing to negotiate with Washington with the intention of doing so “find a solution through dialogue to the bilateral differences we have between the two nations,” according to President Miguel Diaz-Canel.
Speaking at an investment conference in Miami on Friday, the US president said his policy of “Peace through strength” – including the raid to kidnap Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in January and the decision to go to war with Iran amid nuclear talks last month – was “very, very successful.”
“I built this great army. I said you’ll never use it. But sometimes you have to use it. And Cuba is next, that way,” he told the audience.
“But pretend I didn’t say that. Please pretend I didn’t. Please, please, please, media, please ignore that statement. Thank you very much. Cuba next,” he added.
Trump has repeatedly threatened “take” Cuba “somehow,” a warning “total fat restriction” and taxes on countries that supply oil to the island.
Cuba has faced severe oil shortages and blackouts in recent months after Caracas, Havana’s closest ally, cut off oil exports following pressure from Washington.
On Saturday, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez condemned Washington’s action “strict restrictions” of fuel equipment, call it a “brutal attacks” on the country’s economic system.
“For more than 67 years, the United States has waged economic war against Cuba with the intention of harming the economy and denying access to markets and technology,” He said in a statement on X, saying that such “relentless aggression” against the allegedly incompetent Cuban government only shows Washington’s own weakness.
At the same time Cuba has launched a nationwide civilian military exercise involving reservists and local units, as part of “all people’s war” defense doctrine.
