The impact of the Middle East crisis on the Philippines

The negative effects of the US-Israel war against Iran have been seen far and wide, including in the Philippines, a nation that relies heavily on the Middle East for oil.

A national energy emergency is in effect as domestic oil prices continue to climb to new record highs. Pressure is mounting across industries, from transportation and logistics to commerce and agriculture. Workers and ordinary consumers are feeling the immediate – and severe – effects of the crisis.

The security and livelihood of more than 2 million Filipinos in the Middle East are also at risk. More than 3,000 of them have been able to return home as the Philippine government works to repatriate them, but now they face an uncertain future.

On this page, we bring you the latest news, photos, videos, and insights about the impact of the Middle East conflict on the Philippines, as well as the biggest events in the war.

The Department of Energy (DOE) said on Monday, March 30, that the country’s oil inventory could last up to 50.9 days as of Friday, March 27, more than the 45 days previously estimated. Energy Secretary Sharon Garin attributed this to the replenishment of supplies used last week.

Garin also said that the Philippines bought more than 1 million barrels of diesel, 142,000 of which arrived from Japan last Thursday, March 26. The DOE expects to ship around 300,000 barrels from Singapore and Malaysia in early April.
