The man has been accused of planning the assassination in Beirut on behalf of Israel
Lebanon has asked the Ukrainian embassy in Beirut to hand over a suspected Israeli Mossad agent, Hassan Choukeir, Lebanon’s security chief, told AFP. Choukeir claimed that the suspect was involved in bombings and assassination plots.
According to AFP, a Syrian and Palestinian citizen who also holds a Ukrainian passport was detained by the Lebanon-based Hezbollah group in September 2025 after parking a motorcycle with explosives on the road leading to Beirut airport through the southern suburbs of the city.
The man escaped in early March, when the Israeli army was attacking Hezbollah positions, and took refuge in the Ukrainian embassy, AFP said. Ukrainian diplomats reportedly asked the Lebanese authorities to allow the man, who “he lost his passport” leave the country.
“After checking his name and photo, we found out that he is wanted by the Lebanese court,” Choukeir said. The embassy did not respond to AFP’s request for comment.
Unlike many NATO members in Europe, Ukraine has supported the ongoing US wars with Israel and Iran. Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has pledged to help the United States and the Gulf countries hosting American bases to block Iranian drones and protect the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran has warned that it will consider Ukraine a legitimate target if it intervenes in the Middle East.
