US President Donald Trump claims Iran has asked for a ceasefire, but said he will consider if the Strait of Hormuz is reopened.
“The President of the New Iranian Regime, less radical and more intelligent than his predecessors, has asked the United States for a cease-fire!” Trump said in a post on Social Reality around midnight AEDT.
“We will pay attention when the Strait of Hormuz is open, free, and open. Until then, we forget Iran into oblivion or, as they say, back to the Stone Age!!!”
This week, the White House and other parts of the US government have clarified that reopening the channel it is not considered the main objective of the Iranian missionafter Trump told Britain and other countries “go get your own oil”.
The aircraft carrier USS George HW Bush is due to go to the Middle East with three destroyers, two US officials said. The carrier strike group has more than 6,000 sailors. It comes as thousands of troops from the 82nd Airlift Wing have also begun arriving in the Middle East, according to two other US officials.
